According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, these are the levels of language proficiency: A1 and A2 = beginner; B1 and B2 = intermediate; and C1 = advanced. It takes 120 hours of classroom study (plus home study) to reach level A1, another 120 hours to reach A2 and so on. If you take classes in an average school, it will take you approximately four years to reach an intermediate level. With personalized online classes you could reach it in less than half that time.
